"Our people are good people; our people are kind people. Pray God some day kind people won't all be poor. Pray God some day a kid can eat. And the associations of owners knew that some day the praying would stop. And there's the end."
-- John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath

Winter Field - Washington Monument

Other fields: Summer Field (FDR Memorial) | Emergency Backup Field (Peirce Mill) | Other Emergency Backup Field (West of the Polo Grounds)

Our winter field is on the southwest side of the Washington Monument, closest to 17th St. and Independence. Parking in the Tidal Basin lot is plentiful. Closest Metro stop is Smithsonian.

Besides street parking, there are 2 lots to try: The first is off Constitution across from the Ellipse. The second is along the Tidal Basin, where you'd park for the paddle boats. You can enter it only by driving east along the Tidal Basin. So, if you're coming south on 15th, turn right onto Independence. Just before 17th St., lanes split into straight and forced lefthand and righthand turns. Turn left, which puts you back on Independence going east. Get into the right lane, which forks off (Ind. goes straight; it's Maine Ave. to the right), and look for the entrance to the parking lot (brown sign) just ahead (before the light). Drive as far into the parking lot as you can--the lot exit is closest to the Wash. Monument. Those streets are somewhat confusing, but the lot is fairly easy to get to if you keep an eye out for the sign.
